Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has recently addressed reports suggesting Virat Kohli’s potential return to Test cricket, stating that such claims are untrue. He emphasized that Indian cricket has never implored any player to come out of retirement once they have made their decision.

Kohli’s stellar performance in the first ODI against South Africa, where he scored 135 runs off 120 balls, sparked speculation about his return to the Test arena. However, Chopra debunked these rumors in a video shared on his YouTube channel. He refuted claims that Kohli has been asked to reconsider his retirement from Test cricket.

“There was a question about whether Virat Kohli will be playing Test cricket again. I don’t think that conversation is even happening. People are saying that their sources are credible, that they have fallen at his feet and requested him to return as nothing can happen for them without him,” Chopra stated.

He further explained that Indian cricket operates differently, never approaching retired players to make a comeback. While retired players are always revered for their contributions, they are never pressured to return to the game.

“Indian cricket hasn’t gone to anyone asking them to come out of retirement. We don’t say that. Indian cricket has never pleaded with anyone,” Chopra emphasized.

Virat Kohli had announced his Test retirement before the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, having amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 matches. He reiterated his commitment to playing only one format internationally during the post-match presentation of the first ODI against South Africa.

Chopra also pointed out that with no Test cricket scheduled for the next 10 months, any discussions about Kohli’s return to the format would be premature. India’s upcoming Test series include matches against Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Australia, but they won’t be playing red-ball cricket anytime soon.

“It’s clickbait. I am sure it will get views. They will get what they want, but the truth is that there is no Test cricket for the next 10 months. So if someone has to talk, they would do it later. Why would they do it now? So that conversation is not happening at all,” Chopra clarified.

In conclusion, it is evident that the rumors surrounding Virat Kohli’s Test comeback are unfounded, with Chopra dismissing the speculation as baseless. Indian cricket’s approach to retired players remains consistent, valuing their contributions without pressuring them to return to the game.
