Mass Shootings Decline in 2025, But Experts Warn Against Complacency

By REBECCA BOONE, Associated Press

A tragic shooting incident at a children’s birthday party in California last weekend resulted in the deaths of four individuals, marking the 17th mass killing of the year. However, this year’s numbers represent a significant drop compared to previous years, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University.

While experts acknowledge the positive trend, they caution against assuming that safer days are guaranteed. Criminologist James Alan Fox suggests that the decrease in mass killings may simply be a statistical regression to the mean, following unusually high numbers in 2018 and 2019.

James Densley, a professor in Minnesota, emphasizes that mass killings are rare events, making the data prone to volatility. Despite the positive outlook for 2025, he warns that the underlying issues have not disappeared.

Possible Factors Contributing to the Decline

Experts speculate that various factors, including a decrease in overall homicide and violent crime rates, improvements in emergency response protocols, and increased focus on threat assessments in schools, could be influencing the decline in mass killings. While progress has been made, Eric Madfis from the University of Washington-Tacoma stresses that the complex nature of crime requires a multifaceted approach.

Christopher Carita highlights the impact of funding from the Safer Communities Act on gun violence prevention programs, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address both the “gun problem” and the “people problem.”

Looking Beyond Mass Killings

Emma Fridel from Florida State University suggests that focusing solely on mass killings may overlook the larger issue of gun violence, which continues to claim a significant number of lives each year. She advocates for a holistic approach that addresses the broader spectrum of firearm-related deaths.

As the conversation around gun violence and mass shootings continues, experts stress the importance of sustained efforts to address the root causes of violence and promote safety in communities.
