The Andy Warhol Foundation has announced the recipients of its annual Arts Writers Grant, with a total of $1.04 million being awarded to 28 arts writers and three translators. This year marks a milestone as the foundation has awarded $30,000 grants to three translators for the first time in the grant’s history.

The three translators, Jessica Gogan, Eriko Ikeda Kay, and viento izquierdo ugaz, will be translating books about contemporary art from Portuguese, Japanese, and Spanish into English. Gogan will be translating “Creation Sundays: A Poetic Collection of the Experimental in Art and Education” by Brazilian critic Federico Morais, which details free expression events at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Ikeda Kay will be translating “From Their ‘Onna no ko shashin’ to Our Girly Photo” by Yurie Nagashima, a book about women photographers in the 1990s. Ugaz will be translating works by the late Peruvian drag queen and performance artist Giuseppe Campuzano in “Saturday Night Thriller and Other Writings, 1992–2013.”

The grant recipients for articles, books, and short-form writings will receive grants ranging from $15,000 to $50,000. Critic Miriam Felton-Dansky will be writing an article on “Vetting Regimes: The US Politics of Artist Visas from the Berlin Wall to the Muslim Ban,” while Elliot Josephine Leila Reichert will be focusing on “The Integrity of the Exhibit: On Art, Censorship, and Palestine.”

Among the grant recipients in the book category is Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts, author of “Harlem is Nowhere,” who will be working on her forthcoming publication “Proving Ground: Proposals for a Genealogy of Black Feminist Land Art.” Additionally, art historian Jenni Sorkin will receive support for her book “Deviant Scale: Cloth at the Body’s Margins.”
