Craft in America Returns for a New Season with “EAST” and “WEST”

“We are all hardwired to do things with our hands,” says Cary Schwarz, a saddlemaker from Salmon, Idaho. “The work of our hands is informing the work of our minds.”

Schwarz is one of the artists featured in “WEST,” one of the two new episodes in the documentary series Craft in America. The new season premieres this December on PBS, showcasing stories of artists in the Eastern and Western United States.

These episodes are part of Craft in America’s celebration of the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary and PBS’s slate of programming for PBS America @ 250. Following “EAST” and “WEST,” viewers can look forward to “NORTH” and “SOUTH,” premiering in 2026.

This four-episode event is part of the Handwork 2026 initiative, a nationwide collaboration highlighting the importance of handmade craftsmanship and celebrating the diverse craft that defines America.

In “EAST,” Craft in America delves into the history, culture, and contemporary craft in the eastern region of the United States. Artists like potter Roberto Lugo, pop-up book artist Colette Fu, fiber artist Helena Hernmarck, and others showcase their unique perspectives and creative processes.

On the other hand, “WEST” explores heritage and the handmade in the American West. Artists like bootmaker Graham Ebner, fiber artist Marques Hanalei Marzan, and feather artist Kawika Lum-Nelmida draw inspiration from the landscape, history, and culture of the West to create stunning works of art.

Both episodes are now available for streaming on the PBS app, pbs.org/craftinamerica, and craftinamerica.org. The official premiere of “EAST” and “WEST” will be on PBS and YouTube on Friday, December 19, 2025, at 9pm and 10pm (local time).
