The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been under scrutiny for a series of failures during the Biden-Harris administration. Multiple audits conducted by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) have revealed significant issues within DHS and its subagencies, ranging from vetting and screening processes to the release of foreign nationals that pose national security threats.
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established DHS with the goal of consolidating federal agency resources to enhance national security in response to terrorist threats and disasters. However, recent OIG audits have highlighted failures within DHS, including the inability to share actionable information on emerging threats with external partners.
Despite Congress allocating billions of dollars for DHS technology to improve threat identification and information sharing, the OIG found that partners did not always utilize this technology effectively. As a result, DHS was unable to effectively share emerging threat information with partners, potentially limiting the response to threats against the homeland.
Furthermore, the OIG identified various issues within DHS, such as the release of individuals on the terrorist watchlist due to ineffective practices within U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Additionally, inadequate vetting of Afghanistan nationals admitted into the U.S. and the dismissal of deportation cases due to paperwork failures were also highlighted in OIG reports.
Concerns have been raised about the screening and vetting processes for asylum seekers and the inability to locate migrants once they are released into the United States. The OIG also found that the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement had significant problems, including sending unaccompanied alien children to live with unvetted sponsors and losing track of thousands of children.
These failures within DHS have raised alarms about national security risks and the potential exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Despite these challenges, President Joe Biden recently announced an expansion of refugee application status to citizens and residents of multiple countries worldwide.
It is evident that DHS is facing significant challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the safety and security of the United States. The OIG reports serve as a reminder of the importance of effective oversight and accountability within government agencies responsible for protecting the nation.
