Park Avenue Armory Faces Backlash for Hosting Controversial Performance Artist

Despite years of trying to remove child cadets from their building, Park Avenue Armory is set to showcase a show by performance artist Marina Abramović that features graphic content such as 12-foot penises, open orifices, and provocative scenes of women massaging their breasts. The show, titled “Balkan Erotic Epic,” is making its US debut next year at the historic Upper East Side building, where Abramović also serves as a board member, raising concerns about conflicts of interest.

The controversial show depicts a Balkan nude fertility ritual, with explicit scenes of a groom drilling holes into a wooden bridge and inserting his penis. Critics have described the performance as vainglorious and schlock, filled with soft-porn cliches.

Despite mixed reviews, the Armory is enthusiastic about the show, with CEO Rebecca Robertson stating that it challenges taboos about the human body. Tickets for the December 2026 show are already on sale, priced at $85.

However, the decision to host such a controversial performance has raised eyebrows, especially considering the ongoing court battle between the Park Avenue Conservancy and child cadets who have used a room in the building for over 100 years. The conservancy’s efforts to evict the cadets have been met with resistance, with a bill signed by Gov. Hochul last year protecting the cadet program.

Critics have also raised concerns about the financial aspects of Abramović’s show, questioning the use of public funds for such provocative art. The Armory has received millions in public funds but has faced criticism for its spending on productions that have not generated significant revenue.

Marina Abramović, known for her controversial performances, first gained attention in 1974 for allowing strangers to do whatever they wanted to her for six hours. Her work has often sparked controversy and scandal, including allegations of mismanagement of funds in a previous art center project.

Despite the backlash, Abramović’s work continues to push boundaries and challenge societal norms. The upcoming show at Park Avenue Armory promises to be a thought-provoking experience for those willing to engage with its provocative content.
