Former India batter and selector Devang Gandhi has emphasized the importance of learning from the team’s 2019 ODI World Cup disappointment and strategically planning the batting order for the upcoming 2027 edition in South Africa. The heartbreaking semi-final defeat against New Zealand in the previous tournament highlighted the need for a more organized approach in the crucial matches.

As India gears up for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the team is still in the process of finalizing their best combination, with the duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma being pivotal figures. The recent ODI series against South Africa saw the Men in Blue grappling with injuries, leading to opportunities for players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Washington Sundar, and KL Rahul in the middle order. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal capitalized on the absence of Shubman Gill to register his maiden hundred after a series of lackluster performances.

Devang Gandhi has advised Team India to maintain a limited player pool and assign fixed positions to players to allow them to gradually master their roles. He emphasized the importance of stability in the batting order, citing past instances where the lack of a settled lineup proved detrimental to the team’s performance in major tournaments.

The 2019 World Cup saw India facing a crisis at the crucial No.4 position, with multiple players being tried out without much success. The constant shuffling of players and positions highlighted the need for a more structured approach to team selection and batting order planning.

In contrast to Gandhi’s views, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir advocates for a flexible and dynamic batting unit, with a focus on adaptability rather than fixed positions. Gambhir’s approach involves promoting players based on match situations and the team’s requirements, rather than adhering to a rigid batting order.

The Men in Blue’s upcoming ODI series against New Zealand in early 2026 will provide further insights into the team’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup. With contrasting opinions on the ideal batting order strategy, India will need to strike a balance between stability and flexibility to maximize their chances of success in the upcoming tournament.
