If you have an old Illinois Tollway transponder that needs to be replaced with a more sustainable I-PASS Sticker Tag, it’s important to know how to properly dispose of it. The old transponders contain electronic components that should not be thrown in the trash, but there are easy ways to recycle them.

The retired transponders came in two designs, a windshield-mounted version and a license plate- or roof-mounted plate. You can see examples of these designs in the images provided.

To recycle your Illinois Tollway transponder, the Illinois Tollway encourages customers to bring their old transponders to Illinois Tollway Customer Service Centers at the Belvedere Oasis, Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis, and the Lake Forest Oasis. By dropping off your transponder at these locations, you can ensure that it is disposed of properly.

Another option is to drop off your transponder at a location that accepts lithium-ion batteries. The transponders being retired contain small batteries similar to those found in other portable electronics. Recycling facilities equipped to handle lithium-ion batteries can safely process the electronic components of your transponder. You can find a local recycling location near you by using the Earth911 Recycling Search tool.

In addition to offering recycling options for transponders, the Illinois Tollway is transitioning to I-PASS Sticker Tags. These new sticker tags are a more sustainable option because they do not contain batteries. This means there is no need for future battery swaps or recycling, making them a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective option for drivers.

While existing transponders will still work, upgrading to the sticker tag can help reduce waste and simplify your tollway experience. The benefits of the new I-PASS Sticker Tag include:

– No batteries: Sticker tags do not require batteries, making them safer for the environment and easier to maintain.
– Cost-effective: There is no charge for sticker tags obtained through an Illinois Tollway Customer Service Center or ordered online.
– Convenient: The sticker tag is permanently installed on your vehicle’s windshield and is not transferable between vehicles.

For more information on recycling electronics in your area, you can visit Earth911’s Recycling Search tool. By properly disposing of your old transponder and switching to the more sustainable I-PASS Sticker Tag, you can help reduce waste and contribute to a greener future.
