The Minnesota Vikings surprised many on Wednesday by deciding to keep veteran running back Aaron Jones on a revised contract worth $5.5 million for the 2026 season. Earlier reports had suggested that the team was planning to release Jones, but a change of heart led to the new agreement.

According to NFL network insider Tom Pelissero, the Vikings had initially informed Jones of a potential release but ultimately wanted to retain him for the upcoming season. This led to negotiations for a new deal that resulted in a lower base salary for Jones, allowing him to stay with the team.

Before the restructuring, Jones was set to earn $9 million in base salary for the upcoming season. However, there is a possibility for him to earn back some or all of that money through performance-based incentives tied to his on-field production. Jones, who is 31 years old, will continue to share playing time with Jordan Mason in the upcoming season.

In the 2025 season, Jones recorded 548 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 132 carries in 12 games, a decrease from his performance in the previous season. Despite this, the Vikings see value in keeping him on the roster and believe he can still contribute effectively on the field.

Analysts have applauded the Vikings for their decision to bring back Jones, citing his experience, leadership qualities, and on-field production as valuable assets for the team. Matt Falk, on the “Onebar & Lupagus Show,” expressed his support for the move, emphasizing the importance of having Jones on the team.

Falk also mentioned that while bringing back Jones is a positive step, it should not deter the Vikings from considering drafting a running back in the future. The presence of Jones and Mason provides a conducive environment for a rookie running back to develop and grow within the team.

Overall, the decision to keep Aaron Jones on the roster for the 2026 season has been met with approval from analysts and fans alike. With a revised contract in place, Jones will continue to be a key contributor to the Vikings’ offense and locker room dynamics in the upcoming season.
