Chicago police were involved in a fatal shooting in Arcadia Terrace on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a man who was driving a stolen vehicle. The incident occurred in the 5700 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, where officers from the Lincoln (20th) District were monitoring a stolen BMW. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), a second car pulled up next to the stolen vehicle around 10:25 p.m., prompting tactical officers to intervene.
Two men exited the second vehicle and approached the stolen BMW, leading to a confrontation with the officers. One of the men returned to the driver’s seat of the sedan and refused to comply with the officers’ commands. A struggle ensued, during which the man allegedly accelerated the car with an officer partially inside. In response, the officer fired a single shot, striking the driver. The vehicle then collided with an unoccupied parked car.
The officers removed the man from the car and provided medical assistance until the Chicago Fire Department arrived. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at Illinois Masonic Hospital. His identity has not been disclosed at this time. Meanwhile, the second man who fled the scene was described as a Hispanic individual standing approximately 5’10” tall and wearing black clothing. A woman who accompanied the two men was taken in for questioning.
Upon further investigation, officers discovered two firearms, including one with an automatic fire switch, as well as a car key programming device commonly used by car thieves to clone vehicle fobs. The CPD’s Investigative Response Team is conducting an internal inquiry into the incident, while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability has initiated an independent review. As per standard protocol, the officer or officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.
