Snowplow Driver Placed on Leave After Fatal Crash on I-70

The snowplow driver involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 70 last week has been placed on administrative leave as state officials conduct an investigation, according to Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Ivan Alvarado.

The crash, which occurred near Herman Gulch, resulted in the death of one driver and injuries to eight individuals in a van carrying a youth hockey team headed to Denver for a tournament.

According to state patrol officials, the snowplow lost control in snowy conditions, crossed the median, and collided with multiple vehicles in oncoming traffic, including a Toyota Tacoma and a BMW. The plow also struck a Ford Transit van carrying a girls’ hockey team from California, sending the van down an embankment.

The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and four juvenile passengers were taken to Denver Health for treatment. Another juvenile passenger was airlifted to a trauma center with critical injuries.

State investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash and whether the plow driver will face any charges. The driver has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Colorado Department of Transportation policy.

“The Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate this incident, and the findings will inform next steps,” said Communications Director Matt Inzeo.
