In 2025, STAT conducted interviews with various individuals affected by the Trump administration’s budget cuts and grant terminations. These included a young researcher concerned about job prospects, a cancer patient facing treatment delays, a veteran let go from the FDA, and an epidemiologist tracking NIH grant terminations. Recently, STAT caught up with these individuals to see how their lives have unfolded since.

Karen Hollitt, a veteran let go from the FDA, experienced a resurgence of PTSD symptoms leading up to her job loss. Despite the challenges of finding a new job, she eventually landed a position as a trainer at a credit union serving military families. While the salary is lower than her previous job, Hollitt appreciates the opportunity to help others in the military community.

Epidemiologist Scott Delaney left Harvard after grant terminations affected his job. He chose to focus on Grant Witness, a database tracking canceled NIH grants, and started a consulting business to address health disparities related to the environment. Delaney remains committed to advocating for science and public health through his work.

Brooke Kajdy, a cancer patient, initially received experimental treatment for her cancer with optimism. However, subsequent clinical trials did not result in lasting remission, and she passed away in September 2025. Despite her illness, Kajdy maintained a positive outlook and cherished time with her family.

University administrator Andrew Read continues to navigate the uncertainty of federal funding cuts, impacting research initiatives at Pennsylvania State University. While challenges persist, there has been an increase in NIH funding for the university, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the ongoing obstacles.

Physician Josh Fessel left the NIH in protest and is now seeking a new role aligned with his values. Despite the difficulty of finding a satisfying job in the current market, Fessel remains determined to contribute effectively to the repair and rebuild efforts at the NIH.

Postdoctoral researcher Sam Degregori faced setbacks when his grant program was terminated, but he persevered by securing a fellowship and pursuing faculty positions. Despite the competitive job market, Degregori finds renewed energy in his work and a sense of purpose in pushing forward despite the challenges.

Overall, these individuals demonstrate resilience and determination in the face of adversity, highlighting the enduring impact of the Trump administration’s policies on the scientific community.
