Park Dae-jun Resigns as Coupang CEO Following Data Breach

Park Dae-jun has stepped down as chief executive of Coupang, the leading retail company in South Korea, in the wake of a massive data breach that compromised the personal information of more than half of the country’s population.

In his resignation statement, Park expressed regret for the breach and took full responsibility for the incident and its aftermath.

Coupang has announced the appointment of Harold Rogers, the chief legal officer of Coupang’s parent company based in the United States, as the new CEO, as per the company’s official statement.

Often referred to as the “Amazon of South Korea” for its significant presence in the e-commerce and logistics sectors, Coupang recently disclosed a data breach affecting nearly 34 million individuals. The breach, which reportedly began in June but went undetected until November, was initially believed to have impacted around 4,500 customers before the actual scale of the breach was revealed.

The security incident at Coupang is part of a series of cyberattacks targeting major corporations and government entities in South Korea this year. In addition to the data breach at Coupang, the country also faced a significant data loss due to a fire at a government data center earlier this year.
