World Launches New App Version with Encrypted Chat and Crypto Payment Features
The biometric ID verification project World, co-founded by Sam Altman, has unveiled the latest version of its app today, introducing several new features aimed at enhancing user experience. These include an encrypted chat integration and an expanded capability for sending and requesting cryptocurrency, similar to Venmo.
Founded by the startup Tools for Humanity in 2019, World initially launched its app in 2023 with the goal of providing digital “proof of human” tools to combat AI-generated digital fakery. The company aims to create a verification network that can distinguish humans from bots in today’s digitally-driven world.
At a recent event at World’s headquarters in San Francisco, Altman and CEO Alex Blania introduced the new app version, termed a “super app,” before the product team showcased the new features. Altman explained that the concept for World emerged from discussions about the need for a new economic model based on web3 principles, which the company aims to achieve through its verification network.
One of the key highlights of the new version is the introduction of World Chat, a secure messenger that utilizes end-to-end encryption for user privacy. Users can easily identify verified individuals through color-coded speech bubbles, encouraging verification within the platform. The chat feature was initially launched in beta in March to positive reception.
Another significant addition is the enhanced digital payment system that allows users to send and receive cryptocurrency within the app. Users can receive paychecks directly into their World App virtual bank accounts and make deposits from their traditional bank accounts, with the option to convert funds into crypto seamlessly.
Tiago Sada, World’s chief product officer, emphasized the interactive nature of the new features, particularly World Chat, designed to offer a more social experience while prioritizing security. Sada likened the messenger to popular apps like WhatsApp and Telegram in terms of functionality, with the added security measures of Signal.
World’s unique authentication process involves scanning individuals’ eyes using the Orb device at company offices, creating a verified World ID for access to the app’s services. The company has ambitious goals of scanning a billion people’s eyes to scale verification, though current numbers fall below 20 million scans.
To streamline the verification process, Tools for Humanity introduced Orb Minis, handheld devices that enable users to scan their own eyes at home. Future plans include transforming Orb Minis into mobile point-of-sale devices or licensing ID sensor technology to device manufacturers, potentially reducing barriers to verification and increasing adoption rates.
