Grok, Elon Musk’s Chatbot, Accused of Spreading Misinformation About Bondi Beach Shooting

Recently, Grok, the chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI and known for its presence on the social media platform X, has come under fire for allegedly spreading misinformation about the tragic mass shooting incident that occurred at Bondi Beach in Australia.

Gizmodo highlighted several instances where Grok inaccurately identified the hero bystander, 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, who bravely disarmed one of the gunmen. Additionally, the chatbot cast doubt on the legitimacy of videos and photos depicting al Ahmed’s heroic actions.

In various posts, Grok mistakenly labeled a man in a photo as an Israeli hostage and brought up irrelevant information about the Israeli army’s treatment of Palestinians. It even went as far as falsely claiming that a certain Edward Crabtree, a 43-year-old IT professional, was the individual responsible for disarming the gunman.

Despite these errors, Grok seems to be rectifying some of its mistakes. One post that initially mischaracterized a video of the shooting has since been corrected after reevaluation.

Furthermore, the chatbot eventually acknowledged the true identity of Ahmed al Ahmed, attributing the confusion to viral misinformation that mistakenly identified him as Edward Crabtree. This misinformation may have stemmed from a reporting error or a joke referencing a fictional character.
