China’s Journey Towards Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

In 2025, there is hope that China’s greenhouse gas emissions may finally begin a downward trend, marking a significant milestone in the global fight against climate change. As the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, China has set a target to see its emissions start to decline by 2030, a crucial step in avoiding a climate catastrophe in the years to come.

According to an analysis by Lauri Myllyvirta at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air in Finland for Carbon Brief, the first three quarters of 2025 have shown a slight decrease in emissions, thanks to the rapid deployment of solar and wind power generation. However, the balance is still delicate, and the full year’s results are yet to be determined.

While emissions from the power, cement, and steel sectors have decreased, the chemical industry has seen an increase in coal and oil consumption. Despite this, the growth of solar and wind power has been remarkable, with solar capacity additions equivalent to 100 solar panels installed per second in the first half of 2025.

The trade tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump have had little impact on China’s emissions, as positive and negative forces from the trade war have offset each other. If China’s emissions continue to decline, it is expected that the global trend will follow suit, leading to a positive impact on the fight against climate change.

However, experts like Li Shuo at the Asia Society Policy Institute in Washington DC caution against declaring a peak prematurely, emphasizing the need for more data to confirm the downward trend. The future of achieving the temperature targets set by the Paris Agreement depends on how quickly China and other nations accelerate emissions reductions.

David Fishman at the Lantau Group in Hong Kong believes that while it appears emissions will be down for the year, it is essential to remain cautious about early optimism. He predicts that emissions in China may remain flat until 2030, as Chinese consumers have not yet reached the per capita energy use of high-income nations.

In conclusion, China’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are crucial in the global fight against climate change. The progress made in 2025 is promising, but continued efforts and investments in renewable energy sources are necessary to ensure a sustainable and greener future for all.
