The construction of Waitaki’s “Place of Dreams” at Oamaru’s Centennial Park is progressing as planned.

The Waitaki District Council recently approved the transfer of an $800,000 project underspend from phase one to cover a $500,000 fundraising gap for the Network Waitaki Event Centre build. This decision overrides the previous council’s commitment to return any phase one underspend to ratepayers.

During the council meeting, North Otago Rugby Football Union chairwoman Sene Naoupu highlighted the collaborative effort between the union, the Event Centre Fundraising Trust, and the council to ensure the project’s success. Phase two funding will come from community donations, sponsors, and existing sources, not new ratepayer funds.

The completion of phase two, costing $5.75 million, will include replacement grandstand seating, office space for North Otago Rugby, storage, public toilets, and additional changing facilities. The grandstand will accommodate 450-500 seats.

Event Centre Fundraising Trust chairman Kevin Malcolm expressed gratitude to the council for allowing the project to proceed. He emphasized that the trust is not seeking additional funding from the council beyond the approved amount for phase one.

It was noted that the project is more than just a sports facility; it is about community well-being, pride, and opportunities for the future. The decision to move forward with phase two was not taken lightly, considering the financial implications for ratepayers.

The council’s decision to support the completion of the Event Centre and grandstand was met with mixed reactions. While some viewed it as a necessary investment for the community, others criticized it as a misuse of ratepayers’ money.

In conclusion, the council’s approval paves the way for the successful completion of the Waitaki Event Centre, a project that promises to benefit the community for years to come.
