Diego Lerner, a prominent figure at The Walt Disney Company, passed away on December 18 in Buenos Aires at the age of 71 after battling a long illness. He had been a driving force behind Disney’s expansion in Latin America and Europe for nearly 35 years, leaving a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.

In a touching tribute, Lerner was appointed honorary president of The Walt Disney Company Latin America in November, with Martin Iraola succeeding him in the role. A private funeral was held for Lerner, attended by close friends and colleagues such as Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, the creator of “The Boss.”

Throughout his career, Lerner played a pivotal role in Disney’s growth in the region, navigating through the shifts in the TV industry from traditional pay TV to streaming services like Disney+. He firmly believed in the power of storytelling, emphasizing the importance of quality content above all else.

Lerner’s impact on Disney’s international operations was significant, with his strategic vision leading to the launch of key channels in Latin America such as Disney Channel, Jetix, and Playhouse Disney. He also championed local content creation, recognizing the value of telling stories that resonate with audiences in different regions.

In 2009, Lerner was appointed president of The Walt Disney Company in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, where he continued to drive growth and consumer engagement. His tenure saw the company adapt to the rise of streaming platforms and the increasing demand for original content.

Upon his return to Argentina in 2018, Lerner focused on expanding Disney’s presence in Latin America, spearheading the development of over 70 original productions in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. His efforts led to the creation of successful shows like “Monzón” and “The Boss,” showcasing the talent and diversity of Latin American storytelling.

One of Lerner’s most notable achievements came in securing rights to Argentina’s soccer Primera Division, despite facing challenges and political opposition. Through his perseverance and strategic alliances, he successfully negotiated a deal that allowed Disney to continue broadcasting the games in partnership with TNT.

Diego Lerner’s legacy at The Walt Disney Company is one of innovation, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling. His contributions to the company and the entertainment industry as a whole will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
