During the ongoing conflict, relations between Ukraine and Hungary have become increasingly strained.

Since Ukraine’s bombing of the Druzhba pipeline, crucial for Hungary’s energy security, the diplomatic ties appear to be deteriorating further, possibly irreparably.

In what seems like a desperate attempt to escalate tensions, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made the rather outlandish claim that Hungarian drones invaded Ukrainian airspace.

This assertion has sparked a vehement backlash from Hungary.

According to Reuters, Zelenskyy stated, “Reconnaissance drones that breached Ukraine’s airspace may have originated from Hungary, possibly to assess the industrial capabilities of our western regions.” This has been met with mockery from Budapest.

‘President Zelenskyy seems to be losing his grip due to his unfounded hostility towards Hungary. He’s now imagining threats that don’t exist.’ Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto quipped on social media.

Despite Hungary being a member of both the European Union and NATO—two entities that ostensibly support Kyiv in its struggle against Russia—relations between the two nations have historically been tumultuous.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has often expressed skepticism regarding the extent of Western military aid to Ukraine, maintaining a relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin that is more cordial than that of other NATO or EU leaders.

Response from Prime Minister Orbán:

‘Hungary’s membership in NATO and the EU has been pivotal for Ukraine’s survival. President Zelenskyy, with all due respect, it would be wise to stop harassing us.’

Imagine if Ukraine did down a Hungarian drone—would Hungary invoke Article 5? One can only jest in such absurd situations.

Hungary’s Minister of Defense remarked:

‘Zelenskyy’s assertions that a Hungarian military drone was involved in any incursions are categorically false. The Hungarian Defense Forces did not conduct such operations and are committed to remaining neutral in this conflict.’

Further reading on the rising tensions:

Viktor Orbán sharply criticizes Zelenskyy for the attack on the ‘Druzhba’ (‘Friendship’) Pipeline and subsequent threats against Hungary.
