Carlos Alcaraz, currently the ATP’s top-ranked men’s singles player, has found himself at the center of controversy as former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski has criticized his approach to the off-season. Rusedski, in his Off Court with Greg podcast, pointed out Alcaraz’s participation in exhibition matches as a potential reason for his split with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

While Alcaraz enjoyed a successful 2025 season, his decision to continue playing in exhibition events during the off-season has raised eyebrows. Rusedski highlighted the contrasting approach taken by Alcaraz’s rival Jannik Sinner, who chose to focus on rest and preparation for the upcoming season instead of exhibition matches.

Rusedski emphasized the importance of utilizing the off-season to prepare for the new season, citing the examples of tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, who prioritized rest and practice during this period. He expressed concern that Alcaraz’s belief in his ability to continue without adequate rest might be detrimental to his long-term success.

This is not the first time Alcaraz has faced criticism for his extensive participation in exhibition matches. Despite his complaints about the demanding tournament calendar, he has defended his choice by stating that exhibition matches do not tax him as much mentally or physically as official competitions.

As the 2026 season approaches, Alcaraz and Sinner, the dominant forces in men’s singles tennis, are gearing up to face each other in an exhibition match in South Korea before the Australian Open. The two players have been on a dominating run in recent Grand Slam tournaments, with Alcaraz seeking his first Australian Open title while Sinner aims to defend his trophy.

The exhibition match between Alcaraz and Sinner promises to be a thrilling showdown between two of the sport’s brightest talents. Fans can expect an intense battle between the top-ranked players as they set the stage for what promises to be an exciting 2026 season in men’s singles tennis.
