John Lydon, known for his iconic role as Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols, has once again stirred up controversy by accusing his former bandmates of cutting him off completely after the passing of his wife, Nora Forster. Lydon, 69, expressed his disappointment and hurt at the lack of contact from Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock, and drummer Paul Cook following his wife’s death in April 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
As Nora’s primary caregiver during her final years, Lydon had hoped for some form of support or connection from his bandmates during such a difficult time. However, the silence from the Pistols members only deepened the existing rift between them, especially since the band had resumed touring without him.
A close source revealed, “John felt abandoned at the lowest point of his life and feels his former bandmates have been totally callous. Whatever history they share, he thought basic human decency would prevail.”
The strained relationship between Lydon and his bandmates has been ongoing for years, but tensions escalated when the Sex Pistols returned to the stage with Frank Carter as the new vocalist, replacing Lydon. Lydon criticized the reunion as insincere and disrespectful to the band’s legacy, referring to it as “karaoke” and questioning why the band hadn’t produced new material.
In response to the comparisons between himself and Carter, Lydon emphasized, “Of course, it’s karaoke, but it’s like come on, Mr. Carter, you’re not Johnny Rotten, I am. Right? Stop it.” Despite his reservations about the new lineup, he acknowledged Carter’s rock attitude and expressed some level of respect for his approach.
While the Pistols and Carter embarked on a series of shows, including performances in London and overseas, Lydon continued to tour with his band Public Image Ltd. The bitterness between Lydon and his former bandmates shows no sign of dissipating, as the feud remains one of the most intense in the world of rock music.
