A Kentucky woman, Melinda Spencer, has been charged with fetal homicide after allegedly using abortion pills and burying the fetus in a Christmas-wrapped lightbulb box in her backyard. The shocking incident unfolded after Spencer got pregnant following an affair with a man who was not her boyfriend.

According to Kentucky State Police, Spencer, 35, visited a health care clinic in Campton and admitted to staff members that she had used medication purchased online to terminate her pregnancy. This act is illegal in the state of Kentucky. She confessed to taking the pills on December 26 and burying the fetus, described as a “developed male infant,” two days later in a shallow grave at her home on Flat Mary Road.

Law enforcement officials obtained a search warrant and discovered the remains wrapped in a white rag inside a Christmas-wrapped lightbulb box, which was decorated for the holiday season, and placed in a plastic bag. Spencer later revealed that she had ordered the abortion pills because she did not want the man she had an affair with to find out about the pregnancy. She expressed a desire to “abort the fetus on her own.”

The exact duration of Spencer’s pregnancy before taking the pills is unknown, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the development stage of the fetus. In Kentucky, almost all abortions are prohibited, with exceptions only in cases where the mother’s life or health is at risk.

Spencer has been charged with first-degree fetal homicide, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and first-degree promoting contraband. The fetal homicide charge could potentially lead to the death penalty, and if convicted, Spencer faces life imprisonment. She is currently being held at Three Forks Regional Jail in Beattyville.

The case has brought to light the strict abortion laws in Kentucky, which do not make exceptions for rape or incest and also prohibit the distribution of abortion medication. Spencer’s actions have sparked outrage and debate over reproductive rights and the consequences of illegal abortion procedures.
