A driver in Dunedin was reportedly seen by a member of the public with an open beverage after crashing into another car, police report.

The incident took place on Anzac Ave around 5.30pm last Friday, prompting a call to the authorities.

According to Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, the witness approached the 54-year-old driver who “smelled of alcohol” and noticed the open beverage in the car.

Although the man initially left the scene, he was later found at his residence and subjected to a drink driving procedure. He was subsequently arrested and charged with careless driving and failing to stop to ascertain injury.

Further charges are likely pending the results of a blood sample test.

Another crash occurred on Great King St at approximately 7.30pm the following Saturday involving a 45-year-old man who had recently visited Pizza Hut Dunedin North.

After grabbing a pizza and hitting two parked cars, the man continued driving until being apprehended by the police the next day.

He has been bailed to appear in the Dunedin District Court on Thursday, facing charges of failing to stop to ascertain injury.
