The Chicago Cubs have been keeping an eye on top free agents Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, and Bo Bichette as they look to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season. However, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, the likelihood of the Cubs signing any of these high-profile players to a big contract is low.

Mooney explained on a recent episode of “North Side Territory” that while the Cubs may be exploring the possibility of adding these players to their roster, they are unlikely to make a significant financial commitment to any of them. He mentioned that the front office is in discussions with agents like Scott Boras, who represents Bregman, and Excel, which represents Tucker. While Bichette has not been a focal point of discussions, Mooney believes he could be a valuable long-term asset for the team.

In addition to these top free agents, the Cubs were also rumored to be interested in Dylan Cease, Michael King, Tatsuya Imai, and Kazuma Okamoto. However, insider Paul Magno of “Chi City Sports” argued in a recent article that the team may have actually benefited from missing out on these players.

Magno pointed out that Cease’s long-term contract may not be a wise investment given his age and injury history, while King’s struggles and Imai’s lack of MLB experience raise concerns about their potential impact. Okamoto, on the other hand, is seen as a questionable upgrade over current third baseman Matt Shaw.

While it may be true that the Cubs dodged a bullet by not signing these players, the team still has holes to fill on their roster. Fans will be hoping that the organization can make the necessary moves to strengthen the team and compete for success in the upcoming season.

Overall, the Cubs’ approach to free agency may not involve splurging on high-priced talent, but rather making strategic moves to address their needs. Only time will tell if this strategy pays off for the team in the long run.
