Residents in the Selwyn district can expect more frequent water meter readings in the near future. Currently, readings are conducted twice a year, with households receiving separate bills for each cubic metre of water used. However, starting in July, Selwyn Water Ltd, the new council-controlled organization, will take over billing and plans to increase the frequency of meter readings and bills.

The aim behind the increased meter readings is to create a more accurate database of water demand in different areas throughout the year. Murray Strong, the chair of Selwyn Water board, explained that the increased frequency of readings will help spread the cost for ratepayers and allow for a more demand-led approach to future planning.

Estimates suggest that water and wastewater bills for households will increase by an average of 16.5% or around $245 in the 2025/26 financial year. This increase will mainly come from usage charges and higher connection fees, which will now be billed separately by Selwyn Water.

Despite some concerns about operating close to its borrowing limit, Selwyn Water aims for financial sustainability by June 2028. The company estimates a need for over $600 million in infrastructure investment for drinking water and wastewater over the next decade.

Here is the breakdown of estimated charges as of July 1, 2026:

  • Metered supply rate: $323 (up from $258)
  • Water connection: $422 (up from $370)
  • Sewage connection: $807 (up from $702)
  • Stormwater rate: $175 (up from $152, council-controlled)

Overall, Selwyn Water is undergoing significant changes in how water services are managed and billed, with a focus on improving efficiency and financial sustainability for the future.
