‘Everything is Hungary’s fault’.

A peculiar phenomenon is currently sweeping through the more paranoid segments of the European Union’s inner circles, and it goes by the uncomfortable label of Hungarophobia—in shorthand, a rather significant grudge against Hungary’s conservative governance.

This rising tide of blame seems reminiscent of the “Russian treatment” often aimed at dissenters; Hungary is now the latest recipient of psychological operations and misinformation aimed at unraveling its status within the EU.

Just about ten days ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky leveled a striking accusation against Budapest, claiming that Hungary had launched drones into Ukrainian airspace. However, this accusation—void of evidence—quickly faded into the background noise of discontent.

Now, opponents of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are back in the news with yet another allegation, purportedly uncovering a Hungarian espionage network operating in the heart of Brussels.

Watch: Commission spokesperson Balázs Ujvári.

Euronews reported:

“The spoonfeeding of sensationalism continues as the European Commission dives into allegations that Hungarian secret services were attempting to recruit employees of the EU in Brussels as questionable informants.”

“The probe was initiated following several media reports claiming this so-called spy ring was masquerading as diplomats from the Hungarian permanent representation, previously helmed by Olivér Várhelyi, who has now ascended to official duties as a European Commissioner.”

This alleged cohort of spies supposedly targeted Hungarian nationals employed by the European Commission, ostensibly under the pretense of diplomacy.

“We will set up an internal group to investigate these allegations,” Commission spokesperson Balázs Ujvári announced.

Earlier, Hungarian news outlet Direct36, in coalition with German Paper Trail Media and Belgium’s De Tijd, highlighted how Hungarian intelligence was allegedly striving to amass a network of Hungarians within EU institutions.”
