Crime rates in Washington, DC saw a significant decrease at the end of 2025, with homicides dropping by 60% and carjackings by 68%. Overall crime in the nation’s capital decreased by 32%, a remarkable achievement that US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, attributed to President Trump’s crackdown on crime in the city. Pirro highlighted the impact of Trump’s executive order on making DC safe and beautiful, emphasizing the incredible progress that has been made.

The comparison between August-December 2024 and August-December 2025 showcased the benefits of Trump’s surge of resources to combat crime in DC. This timeframe revealed an even more dramatic plunge in crime compared to the full year of 2025 versus 2024. Data from DC’s Metropolitan Police Department indicated a 32% decrease in homicides and a 17% decrease in total crime for the full year of 2025.

Despite violent crime hitting a 30-year low at the end of 2024, Pirro expressed skepticism about the prior data, citing issues with the statistics reported by the MPD. A report published by the GOP-led House Oversight Committee raised concerns about flaws in the MPD’s crime data, suggesting that various types of lawbreaking were undercounted.

However, Pirro expressed confidence in the recent numbers for 2025, attributing the significant decrease in crime during her tenure as DC’s top federal prosecutor to legitimate progress. She mentioned ongoing efforts to work with the MPD on crime classifications and data accuracy, noting the appointment of Jeffery Carroll as the new interim Chief of Police for the MPD.

While celebrating the drop in overall crime rates, Pirro addressed the concerning spike in strangulation cases, emphasizing the need to protect victims of domestic violence. She highlighted the dangers of strangulation and the increased risk of fatality for victims, urging individuals to seek help and leave dangerous situations.

Looking ahead to 2026, Pirro vowed to continue the fight against crime in DC, focusing on emerging threats like cybercrime and organized crime rings. She emphasized the dedication of resources to combat criminal activities and called for tougher prosecution measures against juveniles and a reconsideration of existing laws like the Second Chance Amendment Act of 2022.

In conclusion, the significant decrease in crime rates in Washington, DC reflects the ongoing efforts to make the city safer under President Trump’s administration. The commitment to combating crime and addressing emerging threats signals a proactive approach to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the nation’s capital.
