Melissa Gilbert Speaks Out Against Child Exploitation in Wake of Husband’s Scandal
As the scandal surrounding her husband Timothy Busfield continues to unfold, Melissa Gilbert’s past statements on child exploitation have resurfaced, shedding light on her strong stance against such heinous acts.
In a now-deleted Instagram post from November 15, Gilbert reflected on her teenage years as an actress on Little House on the Prairie, where she worked alongside Dean Butler, who was nine years her senior and played her on-screen love interest.
“So, I debated posting this but, I feel compelled to share,” Gilbert wrote. “After seeing many women’s posts with the hashtags #iwasfifteen #imfifteen #iwasachild, I decided to Google search myself at that age and see what came up. And this is some of what I found.”
Expressing her shock and disgust at the content she came across, Gilbert emphasized the importance of having a support system in place to ensure the safety of young performers. She acknowledged her own privilege in having her mother and others looking out for her during her formative years in the industry.
Her post was prompted by a controversial statement made by Megyn Kelly regarding Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, prompting Gilbert to caution against the casual use of such labels and the need to be mindful of the language used when discussing sensitive issues like child abuse.
While Gilbert has been vocal in the past about her views on child exploitation, she has remained silent on the allegations surrounding her husband Timothy Busfield, who has recently been accused of misconduct.
As the public awaits further developments in this unfolding scandal, Gilbert’s unwavering stance against child exploitation serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding young individuals in the entertainment industry and beyond.
