Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff for policy, has sparked controversy with his recent remarks to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. During an interview with Fox News host Will Cain, Miller stated that ICE agents have “federal immunity in the conduct of your duties” and warned that anyone who interferes with them is “committing a felony.”
Legal experts and commentators have criticized Miller’s comments, pointing out that prosecuting federal agents is possible, despite the challenges involved. Some have described his tone as “chilling” and a “greenlight for abuse,” suggesting that it could lead to increased violence and terror.
Miller’s statements come at a time when ICE is under scrutiny following the killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis.
In his full remarks, Miller said:
“To all ICE officers: You have federal immunity in the conduct of your duties. Anyone who obstructs you is committing a felony. No one can prevent you from fulfilling your legal obligations. If officials cross the line into obstruction or criminal conspiracy against ICE officers, they will face justice.”
The Department of Homeland Security has shared footage of Miller’s comments on social media, reminding ICE officers of their rights and responsibilities.
