A man arrested for violently mugging DePaul University student in Chicago Loop

A 24-year-old man named Romeo Luna is currently in jail awaiting trial after Chicago police witnessed him violently mugging a female DePaul University student in the Loop. The victim, a 19-year-old woman, had just finished her class at the downtown campus of the university and was walking south on State Street when Luna began following her around 1:45 p.m. on January 13, according to prosecutors.

As the woman was holding her iPhone with both hands, using Google Maps and talking on the device, Luna approached her at the corner of Ida B Wells Drive and South State Street. Luna allegedly tried to snatch the phone from her, pulling at it and dragging her to the ground in an attempt to take it away. He even kicked her in the stomach, forcing her to release the phone, as stated in the detention petition filed by prosecutors.

Romeo Luna (Chicago Police Department)

After successfully grabbing the phone, Luna fled to a nearby 2014 gold Chevrolet Malibu and jumped into the passenger seat. However, two Chicago police officers who were in the vicinity witnessed the entire incident. They promptly activated their squad car lights, blocked the Malibu at the intersection, and apprehended Luna. The officers managed to recover the woman’s phone from beside the vehicle.

Luna is facing charges of robbery and three counts of possessing a controlled substance, suspected to be amphetamine, alprazolam, and oxycodone. Judge John Hock approved the detention petition against Luna, keeping him in custody until his trial.
