Walmart is set to launch clinical research sites this spring in select stores and former shuttered outpatient health center locations. The retail giant, which closed over 50 retail health clinics nearly two years ago, is venturing into a new business to provide clinical research opportunities in markets, including rural areas with limited access to clinical trials.

Dr. Emily Aaronson, Walmart’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasized the importance of starting healthcare closer to home. She believes that healthcare progress can be achieved not only in large medical centers but also in neighborhoods, towns, and rural communities where people already trust and rely on everyday. In collaboration with Care Access, an independent clinical research firm, Walmart Healthcare Research Institute will open research sites in three former Walmart Health locations and one rural Walmart store.

By transforming familiar spaces into research engagement sites, Walmart aims to reduce barriers to participation in clinical trials. The on-site Care Access clinical teams will provide health screenings, information about research opportunities, and assistance for individuals interested in joining studies without having to travel far from home. This initiative aligns with the nationwide effort to enhance drug research and patient health outcomes by enrolling more underrepresented Americans in clinical trials.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, there is a growing demand for diverse populations to participate in research studies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recognized the underrepresentation of racial and ethnic minorities in biomedical research and has taken steps to address this disparity. Walmart’s approach to healthcare emphasizes community-centered support that fits into people’s routines and respects their time, making care more accessible and human.

In conclusion, Walmart’s entry into clinical research signifies a shift towards a more inclusive and community-focused approach to healthcare. By bringing research opportunities closer to home, Walmart aims to empower individuals to participate in innovative studies and access potential future treatments. This initiative not only benefits participants but also contributes to the advancement of medical research and the improvement of patient care.
