The first US execution of the year took place in Texas on Wednesday evening, as Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was put to death by lethal injection for the 1998 murders of his ex-girlfriend, Glenda Dennise Hayslip, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain.
Thompson was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. local time at the Huntsville Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Before the injection, he asked for forgiveness from the families of his victims, expressing his remorse and urging them to find healing and peace.
Despite his apology, Thompson acknowledged that there were no winners in the situation, stating that his execution only created more victims and trauma for those involved. He emphasized the importance of keeping faith and love in their lives, urging them to prioritize Jesus.
As the lethal dose took effect, Thompson gasped loudly and eventually stopped moving, passing away about 22 minutes later. Witnesses, including Dennis Cain, the father of one of the victims, expressed closure and a sense of justice being served.
The murders occurred in Hayslip’s apartment after an argument between Thompson and Cain escalated into a fatal shooting. Thompson was initially sentenced to death, but after an escape from jail and subsequent recapture, he was resentenced to die by lethal injection in 2005.
Despite a final appeal to the US Supreme Court and a request for clemency being denied by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, Thompson’s execution proceeded as scheduled. The event marked the end of a long legal process and brought a sense of closure for the families of the victims.
