A shooting incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near Area 3 Police Headquarters on the North Side, where a man was shot during a brawl. Fortunately, his cellphone acted as a shield, stopping one of the bullets aimed at him.

The incident unfolded around 3:20 a.m. outside a bar in the 3200 block of North Western Avenue, with officers initially responding to reports of a group fighting. Soon after, a report of a person shot emerged.

According to the Chicago Police Department, a 34-year-old man was engaged in a verbal altercation with an unidentified individual who brandished a firearm and fired at the victim before fleeing the scene. The man sustained a gunshot wound to the hip and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.

During the investigation, officers recovered two shell casings and found a bullet lodged in the victim’s phone, which was in his pocket at the time of the shooting. Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic man aged 21 to 30, with a beard, who escaped south on Western Avenue in a white sedan, possibly a Nissan.

This incident marked the first shooting of the year in the area encompassing Roscoe Village and the North Center community. Despite being known as one of the safer areas in Chicago, with only five shootings recorded in North Center last year, the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of violence.

CWBChicago, a news outlet dedicated to providing accurate and detailed public safety reporting, was founded in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown. Over the years, their coverage area has expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas, all while upholding their mission to deliver comprehensive news that goes beyond mainstream media.
