The 10th edition of the biennial Singapore Airshow has kicked off with more than 1,000 companies participating in Asia’s biggest aviation gathering. Industry giants like Airbus and Boeing, as well as local champion ST Engineering and new drone-focused defense firms like Anduril Industries and Shield AI, are all in attendance.
The aviation industry is facing challenges with widespread supply chain shortages leading to delays in aircraft deliveries. Despite this, the show is expected to draw even better numbers than the prior edition, with close to 60,000 people attending the trade days in 2024.
The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing rapid growth in air travel, driven by countries like China and India. Passenger traffic growth of 7.3% is projected for 2026, but plane makers and engine manufacturers are struggling to keep up with the demand for fleet expansions.
Jeffrey Lam, president of ST Engineering’s commercial aerospace division, highlighted the mismatch between demand and supply in the aviation market. The industry is eagerly anticipating how it can recover to meet market demand from both airlines and passengers.
Boeing has announced a deal with Air Cambodia for 10 of its 737 MAX jets, while Chinese planemaker COMAC is showcasing its C919 passenger jet. The smaller C909 regional model also received attention at the show, with China’s Shanxi Victory General Aviation signing a letter of intent for six firefighting aircraft.
The Singapore Airshow serves as a key meeting point for regional airline executives, plane makers, and engine manufacturers as they aim to address the growing demand for air travel in the Asia-Pacific region. India, China, and Southeast Asia are forecasted to account for eight of the world’s 10 fastest-growing air travel markets between 2024 and 2044.
The show has attracted attention from the Middle East, with Qatar and Saudi Arabia sending civil aviation delegations to Singapore. Defense offerings are also a significant part of the show, with Israeli companies and China’s AVIC showcasing their products. Boeing has announced the end of building F-15 fighter jets for Indonesia, while Southeast Asian military officials are keenly interested in the defense offerings at the show.
The lunchtime flying display included performances by air force pilots from Singapore, Indonesia, India, China, Malaysia, and Australia. The Singapore Airshow continues to be a significant event in the aviation industry, bringing together key players and showcasing the latest developments in the sector.
