The oceans cover the majority of Earth’s surface, but recent research suggests that there may be an even larger reservoir of hydrogen hidden deep within the planet’s core. A study published in Nature Communications reveals that during Earth’s formation, a significant amount of hydrogen may have been trapped in the core, potentially forming dozens of oceans worth of water.

Previous estimates of the core’s hydrogen content varied widely and were based on indirect measurements. To obtain more accurate data, a team of researchers led by geodynamicist Motohiko Murakami conducted experiments using artificial core samples. These samples, consisting of iron shards surrounded by hydrogen-bearing glass, were subjected to extreme pressure and temperature conditions, simulating the intense environment of Earth’s early core.

As the samples were heated to over 4,800 degrees Celsius, they melted into iron blobs containing silicon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Upon solidifying, the researchers discovered tiny structures within the iron that contained both silicon and hydrogen in equal amounts of atoms. This one-to-one ratio provided crucial information for estimating the hydrogen content of Earth’s core.

Based on their calculations, the researchers determined that approximately 0.07 to 0.36 percent of the weight of Earth’s core is composed of hydrogen. This translates to the equivalent of nine to 45 oceans of water. Over time, some of this hydrogen likely migrated into the mantle, where it could react with oxygen to form water. This water could play a role in facilitating the melting of mantle rocks, leading to volcanic activity on the Earth’s surface.

The findings of this study shed light on the potential influence of hydrogen in Earth’s core on geological processes at the surface. By better understanding the distribution of hydrogen in the core, scientists can gain insights into the planet’s internal dynamics and how they impact surface phenomena such as volcanic eruptions.
