Chicago Man Arrested for Shooting Uber Driver in Road Rage Incident

A 22-year-old Chicago man, Daniel Zaragoza, has been detained by Illinois State Police after allegedly shooting an Uber driver during a road rage incident on the Stevenson Expressway. The incident occurred while two teenage passengers were in the rideshare’s back seat.

According to prosecutors, the 34-year-old Uber driver was driving two 16-year-old passengers when Zaragoza cut him off while merging onto the expressway at Kedzie Avenue. Zaragoza then proceeded to “brake check” the Uber driver, leading to a confrontation.

The victim reported that as he exited at Damen Avenue, he saw Zaragoza’s rear passenger window roll down, heard a loud bang, and was shot in the right thigh. Despite being wounded, the driver managed to drop off both passengers and drive himself home, where his wife called 911. He was later treated at a hospital and released.

Using license plate reader technology, ISP was able to identify Zaragoza’s vehicle and locate him shortly before midnight on the same day of the shooting. Zaragoza, who was driving at the time of his arrest, allegedly confessed to firing a round out of the rear window during the road rage incident, claiming he felt threatened by the other driver.

Zaragoza gave police permission to retrieve a handgun from his apartment, and he was subsequently charged with aggravated battery by discharge of a firearm. Judge Shauna Boliker ordered Zaragoza to be detained pending further legal proceedings.
