Airbnb Unveils Plans to Integrate AI Features into Its App

After a deliberate approach, Airbnb is finally gearing up to introduce AI capabilities within its app. During a recent conference call, CEO Brian Chesky revealed the company’s intentions to incorporate features powered by large language models. These features are expected to enhance the user experience by assisting in searching for listings, planning trips, and aiding hosts in managing their properties.

Chesky emphasized Airbnb’s commitment to leveraging large language models for customer discovery, support, and engineering purposes. The goal is to create an AI-native experience that goes beyond simple search functionality. The app will be designed to understand and cater to the unique preferences of each user, offering comprehensive trip planning assistance for guests and improved business management tools for hosts.

In a separate announcement, Airbnb disclosed that it is currently testing a new feature that allows users to ask natural language queries about properties and locations. This feature is part of the company’s broader strategy to enhance the search experience and provide more personalized recommendations.

While discussing the potential introduction of sponsored property slots within AI search results, Chesky emphasized the importance of prioritizing user experience. He mentioned that the company is currently experimenting with AI search functionality and aims to evolve it into a more conversational and intuitive experience before considering sponsored listings.

Furthermore, Airbnb plans to leverage the expertise of its new CTO, Ahmad Al-Dahle, who has previously worked on Meta’s Llama models, to enhance the app’s utility using identity and review data. The company’s AI-powered customer support bot, which already handles a significant portion of customer queries without human intervention, is set to expand its capabilities to include voice support and multilingual coverage.

Looking ahead, Airbnb is also focused on increasing internal AI adoption among its engineering team. While 80% of engineers currently use AI tools, the company aims to achieve 100% adoption in the near future.

Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Airbnb reported robust financial performance in the fourth quarter, with revenue exceeding expectations at $2.78 billion, marking a 12% increase from the previous year.
