The Pentagon’s Push for AI Companies to Allow Military Use

According to a recent report in Axios, the Pentagon is urging AI companies to permit the U.S. military to utilize their technology for “all lawful purposes.” However, Anthropic is pushing back against this demand.

It has been reported that the government is making similar requests to other AI giants such as OpenAI, Google, and xAI. An anonymous Trump administration official revealed to Axios that one company has agreed to the demand, while the other two are showing some flexibility in their stance.

Among these companies, Anthropic has been the most resistant to the Pentagon’s requests. As a result, the Pentagon is threatening to terminate its $200 million contract with the AI company.

Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal highlighted the disagreements between Anthropic and Defense Department officials regarding the use of its Claude models. The WSJ also reported that Claude was utilized in a military operation to apprehend former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

When contacted for a response, Anthropic did not immediately reply to JS’s request for comment. A spokesperson for the company informed Axios that they have not discussed using Claude for specific operations with the Department of War, but are instead focused on addressing Usage Policy concerns, particularly around fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance.
