Art Shanty Projects: Bringing Art and Community to the Ice

In the Upper Midwest and Canada, where frozen lakes are a way of life during the winter months, ice shanties are a common sight. These small shelters, built on the ice with openings for fishing, are a traditional part of winter recreation for many residents. Inspired by this unique tradition, Art Shanty Projects brings together artists and the public for a one-of-a-kind experience on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.

Each winter, artists from the local community come together to create interactive art installations inside these shanties. The public is invited to explore these creative structures over four weekends, adding a touch of whimsy and artistry to the frozen landscape.

For the 2026 season, artists Emily Quandahl and Madeline Cochran collaborated on a project called “Quilt Shanty.” Their creation featured a vibrant, patchwork design reminiscent of a cozy quilt, bringing a sense of warmth and comfort to the icy surroundings. The artists drew inspiration from their rural upbringing in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where quilting and community gatherings were an integral part of life.

The “Quilt Shanty” was a blend of Quandahl’s painting expertise and Cochran’s multimedia approach, incorporating textiles and weaving techniques. The artists constructed a hoop house frame covered with a quilt made of studio scraps, vinyl, and drop cloths. Wooden quilt-square puzzle pieces and a trifold screen added an interactive element to the installation, inviting visitors to engage with the artwork.

Throughout the month-long exhibition, visitors shared stories of quilts passed down through generations, family members who taught them to sew, and patterns that reminded them of home. The collaborative nature of the project echoed the tradition of quilting bees, where communities came together to create something beautiful through shared labor.

Art Shanty Projects is not just about showcasing art; it’s about building community and creating connections. The “Quilt Shanty” brought people together on the frozen lake, sparking conversations and memories that will last long after the ice has melted.
