Government Shutdown Causes Turmoil for Airport Security Programs

By Ali Swenson, The Associated Press

The Transportation Security Administration announced on Sunday that despite the partial government shutdown, its PreCheck program would remain operational. This decision comes after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security initially stated that airport security services would be suspended during the shutdown.

“As staffing constraints arise, TSA will evaluate on a case by case basis and adjust operations accordingly,” the agency explained.

It remains uncertain whether Global Entry, another airport service designed to expedite security lines for registered travelers, will be affected. The potential suspension of these programs could lead to headaches and delays for millions of Americans who rely on them for smooth travel experiences.

The partial government shutdown, which began on Feb. 14, has caused disruptions in airport security operations as Democrats and the White House struggle to reach a funding deal for the Department of Homeland Security. The situation is further exacerbated by an impending winter storm set to hit the East Coast, resulting in the cancellation of numerous flights.

Homeland Security had previously announced “emergency measures to preserve limited funds,” including the potential suspension of TSA PreCheck lanes and CBP Global Entry service. However, the decision to keep PreCheck operational was met with relief by industry leaders.

Despite the ongoing political turmoil, the impact on travelers is significant. Courtesy escorts for Members of Congress have been suspended, and airlines are urging Congress to reach a resolution to end the shutdown.

Democrats have criticized the administration for jeopardizing airport security programs that enhance travel efficiency and safety. Sen. Andy Kim accused the administration of using the shutdown as a political tool to distract from other pressing issues.

Overall, the uncertainty surrounding airport security services highlights the broader consequences of government shutdowns and the challenges they pose for both travelers and industry stakeholders.
