The team behind the popular weather app Dark Sky, which was acquired by Apple in March 2020, is now introducing a new and improved weather forecasting app called Acme Weather. According to the creators, Acme Weather offers a more reliable forecast compared to its predecessor and comes with unique weather notifications like alerts for rainbows and beautiful sunsets.

One of the standout features of Acme Weather is its use of alternate predictions to supplement the traditional forecast, enhancing accuracy. The app leverages various sources of data including numerical weather prediction models, satellite data, ground station observations, and radar data to provide users with a reliable forecast.

Adam Grossman, co-founder of Dark Sky, explained in a blog post that Acme Weather will display additional forecast lines showing other possible outcomes as gray lines on its graphs. This feature allows users to see different scenarios and plan accordingly, especially for events like winter storms where multiple outcomes are possible.

Unlike traditional weather apps, Acme Weather aims to provide users with a more comprehensive set of weather maps including radar, lightning, rain and snow totals, wind, temperature, humidity, cloud cover, and hurricane tracks. Additionally, the app features Community Reports, allowing users to share real-time weather information to improve accuracy.

In terms of notifications, Acme Weather offers a range of alerts including rain, nearby lightning, community reports, government-issued severe weather alerts, and more. The app also includes experimental alerts such as rainbow predictions and notifications for beautiful sunsets in its “Acme Labs” section.

Users have the option to customize their notifications based on their preferences, focusing on specific weather events like winds, UV index, or the likelihood of rain within the next 24 hours. Acme Weather is available on iOS currently, with plans for an Android version in the future.

The team behind Acme Weather is comprised of co-founders Josh Reyes and Dan Abrutyn, both of whom were part of the Dark Sky team. The app is priced at $25 per year with a two-week free trial to cover the costs associated with maintaining and updating the app’s data sources.
