Summary

  • Wear OS 6 is rolling out now
  • Compatibility limited to Pixel Watch 2 and 3
  • Introduction of Material 3 Expressive UI update
  • New Google Maps auto-launch function

Today marks the launch of the Pixel Watch 4, and with it, Google has started rolling out the Wear OS 6 update for select older Pixel watches.

Our colleague Chris Martin has been testing the new Pixel Watch 4 for about a week and seems pleased overall with Google’s freshest smartwatch offering.

While we aren’t ready to deliver a final review yet, here’s a tip: consider updating your older Pixel Watch first; you might find that you don’t need to purchase the new version at all!

Limitations in Eligibility

Google has announced that “All compatible Pixel Watch models will start receiving WearOS 6 through the October 2025 software update today.”

However, it’s important to note that the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 are the only devices mentioned as eligible. Unfortunately, the original Pixel Watch, which launched in 2022, is conspicuously absent.

We held some hope that the original Pixel Watch would qualify for the Wear OS 6 upgrade since it was expected to receive support until October 2025, but it appears that will not be the case.

What’s New in Watch OS 6?

The latest update introduces Google’s vibrant Material 3 Expressive UI design, which has recently been seen on its smartphones following the launch of the Pixel 10.

Owners of the Pixel Watch 2 and 3 can expect enhancements such as larger buttons, more rounded fonts, and renewed icons. Additionally, dynamic color theming will be available depending on your chosen watch face, alongside updated tile templates and layouts.

A standout feature is the newly added capability of Google Maps auto-launch. If navigation starts on your phone, it will naturally transition to your Pixel Watch.

There’s also new functionality allowing you to extend the duration of an active Safety Check.

To begin the Wear OS 6 update on your Pixel Watch 2 or 3, navigate to Settings > System > System updates if the download isn’t already in progress.
