Winter Storm Hernando Causes Museums Across NYC to Close

Isa Farfan

Winter Storm Hernando is sweeping across the East Coast, prompting museums in New York City to close their doors to the public due to severe weather conditions. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has implemented a temporary travel ban, leading major museums to take precautionary measures and suspend operations for the day.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which remained open during the last significant snowstorm in January, is among the institutions that have decided to close today. Other prominent museums in New York City that have followed suit include the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and the National Museum of the American Indian.

Additionally, Dia Beacon in Upstate New York, The Aldrich in Connecticut, Mass MoCA, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and other museums in the region have also closed their doors for the day. However, all Smithsonian museums in Washington, DC, are remaining open despite the inclement weather.
