The atmosphere at CNN is tense as fears run high among staffers following the recent decision by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery to package the entire company for Paramount Skydance, after initially planning to sell its streaming and studio assets to Netflix. This abrupt change has left employees devastated and filled with dread about the future of their independent newsgathering operations.

The Paramount deal has left many employees at CNN unhappy and uncertain about what lies ahead. The decision by Netflix to walk away from the agreement with Warner in favor of Paramount’s revised bid has added to the anxiety among staff members. Warner CEO David Zaslav emphasized the company’s commitment to maximizing the value of its properties, which include CNN, HBO Max, TNT, and Food Network.

This shift in ownership marks another uncertain chapter for CNN, which has endured several challenges in recent years, including changes in leadership, layoffs, and a shift towards digital content. The combination of CBS News and CNN has been a topic of interest in the past, but unions at CBS News have hindered any potential joint ventures between the two news divisions.

Paramount’s management of CBS News has raised concerns, with some employees expressing dissatisfaction with the current leadership. Bari Weiss, who recently took over editorial operations at the news division, has faced criticism for management gaffes and a focus on digital audiences over traditional TV properties. The departure of long-time correspondent Anderson Cooper from “60 Minutes” is seen as a sign of growing discontent within the organization.

CBS News has also seen declines in viewership, with flagship programs like “CBS Evening News” and “CBS Mornings” experiencing drops in audience numbers. Similarly, CNN has faced challenges in maintaining viewership and influence, with changes in management impacting the network’s performance.

Under new leadership, CNN is aiming to generate revenue through its subscription service, CNN All Access, but faces stiff competition in a crowded media landscape. The network is counting on the success of All Access to drive revenue growth in the coming years.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Paramount deal, CNN’s leadership is urging staff to remain focused on delivering quality journalism to audiences worldwide. The concern among employees is that new owners may shift priorities away from the network’s core mission.
