Money counterfeiting is a persistent issue that money manufacturers face worldwide. In the U.K., for instance, the previous version of the pound coin was so easy to replicate that there were millions of fake copies in circulation before the introduction of a new coin in 2017. To combat this, paper banknotes have been printed with advanced security features like holograms, watermarks, and unique material blends. In recent years, many countries have also started using plastic coatings on their currency.
Banque de France, a prominent central bank in Europe, has implemented a technology called EverFit, which involves a polymer coating on cotton-blend notes to enhance durability. Each year, up to three billion notes are printed, but they must meet stringent technical quality standards. Any notes that fail to meet these standards are shredded. However, a downside to this technology is that the notes are not recyclable.
Paris-based furniture design studio, Maximum, recognized an opportunity in this situation. They have developed a line of stools called Billex, which repurposes discarded banknotes into modern and functional objects. By using the cotton substrate and two layers of plastic coating found in the shredded notes, Maximum is able to heat and compress the fragments into a sturdy shape for the stools. The Billex stools are not only stylish and practical design pieces available in various colors but also serve as a prototype for upcycling shredded notes into different shapes and forms for various applications.
Maximum’s innovative approach to repurposing discarded currency has garnered attention on social media platforms like Instagram. Their unique stools showcase the potential for creative and sustainable solutions in the design industry. By transforming shredded banknotes into functional furniture, Maximum is not only reducing waste but also highlighting the possibilities of reusing materials in innovative ways.
