The Inspirational Stories Behind Arthur Arbesser’s Unique Designs

Arthur Arbesser’s work is not just about creating garments; it’s about telling stories. Growing up in Vienna, he was influenced by his next-door neighbor, Maria Lassnig, one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century. Lassnig’s unique style and approach to art had a profound impact on Arbesser, shaping his creative vision.

Arbesser’s connection to Lassnig goes beyond just being neighbors. As a young boy, he ran errands for her, carrying bags of green apples and lemons that would later inspire a print in his spring 2026 collection. Lassnig’s use of clowns as a motif in her art inspired circus references in Arbesser’s designs, with diamond-patterned collars, stripes, oversized polka dots, and vivid color palettes making a bold statement on the runway.

One of the key elements of Lassnig’s work that resonated with Arbesser was her exploration of identity through self-portraits. This relentless pursuit of self-awareness through art mirrors Arbesser’s own approach to fashion. He sees clothing as a way to express personality and connect with others on a deeper level.

In his latest collection, Arbesser pays homage to Lassnig’s artistic vision by incorporating bold brushstrokes and animalier motifs inspired by her iconic painting, “Sleeping with a Tiger.” The use of cotton drill, poplin, and stretch tulle adds a tactile element to the designs, elevating them beyond mere garments into works of art.

By infusing his designs with the spirit of Maria Lassnig, Arthur Arbesser creates a collection that is not just visually stunning but also emotionally resonant. Each piece tells a story, inviting the wearer to delve into the rich tapestry of inspiration behind the clothes.
