Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) stated on Sunday that Donald Trump should not be held responsible for setting up a regime change for Iran following his military strikes that killed the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

During an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Graham responded to a social media post from the president where Trump expressed hope that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other forces would work together to restore the country’s greatness.

Host Kristen Welker asked Graham if hope was the plan for Iran’s future, to which Graham, a staunch Trump supporter and foreign policy advocate, emphasized that the joint military action with Israel aimed to weaken Iran as a major sponsor of terrorism.

Graham clarified that the goal was to prevent Iran from becoming a state sponsor of terrorism again, regardless of its future government structure, without the need for ground troops.

When pressed by Welker about a plan to ensure these objectives, Graham firmly stated that it was not Trump’s or his responsibility to implement such a plan.

LINDSEY GRAHAM: Our goal is to make sure Iran cannot become again the largest state sponsor of terrorism. WELKER: Does the the president have a plan to guarantee that happens? GRAHAM: No. It’s not his job.

The U.S. Central Command reported that three American service members were killed and five others were seriously injured in the military operation ordered by Trump.

Trump, known for his promise to end “forever wars,” acknowledged the casualties and stated that the operation would ultimately benefit the world.

Graham rejected the idea of the “Pottery Barn rule” and emphasized the importance of ensuring that Iran does not support terrorism, even if the people choose a new form of government.
