Padma Lakshmi, a renowned chef and television personality, found herself back in the world of cooking competition shows after a brief hiatus. Following her departure from hosting Bravo’s “Top Chef” after 19 seasons, Lakshmi focused on other projects like her Hulu series “Taste the Nation” and the accompanying cookbook “Padma’s All American.” However, a dinner with CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach led to discussions about a new show that would give Lakshmi complete creative control.

The result of these conversations is “America’s Culinary Cup,” a show that Lakshmi describes as the biggest challenge of her career. Teaming up with her producing partner Susan Rovner, Lakshmi built the show from the ground up. Rovner’s role was to handle production duties, allowing Lakshmi to focus on the creative aspects of the show. With a premiere date set for March 4 on CBS, just days before the new season of “Top Chef,” Lakshmi is excited to introduce audiences to a new cooking competition experience.

The concept of “America’s Culinary Cup” is ambitious, aiming to create a new institution in the culinary world. Lakshmi envisions the show to be on par with prestigious events like the Bocuse D’Or, with a format that combines elements of traditional cooking competitions with a sporting event vibe. The show offers a whopping $1 million cash prize, the largest in cooking competition history, to attract top-tier chefs to compete.

To differentiate “America’s Culinary Cup” from other cooking shows, Lakshmi wanted to give the chefs everything they needed to showcase their skills. Each contestant was provided with state-of-the-art equipment and access to a fully stocked pantry. The show’s format varies from episode to episode, with challenges ranging from team butchery races to tests on culinary commandments like sustainability and innovation.

With a panel of esteemed judges including Wylie Dufresne and Michael Cimarusti, “America’s Culinary Cup” aims to provide a transparent judging process with numerical scoring. Lakshmi hopes to engage viewers in the same way sports fans analyze game statistics. She also aims to make high-end cooking accessible to a broader audience by explaining culinary terms and techniques in a clear and approachable manner.

While Lakshmi’s on-screen presence is a key component of the show, she emphasizes that the behind-the-scenes work was equally important. From designing the set to selecting contestants, every aspect of “America’s Culinary Cup” was carefully curated to create a unique and engaging experience for both participants and viewers. The show represents a new chapter in Lakshmi’s career, one that combines her passion for food with her desire to push the boundaries of traditional cooking competitions.
