Residents in rural areas of Clutha are being warned by Southern District Police to stay vigilant in light of a recent spate of burglaries in South Otago and Eastern Southland.

Sergeant Tim Coudret, a spokesperson for the police, revealed that thieves have been targeting fuel and equipment on farming properties in the Clutha and Gore districts. He urged the community to assist law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activity they may observe.

“It’s crucial to speak up if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Take a moment to assess your surroundings and inform us of any unusual individuals or occurrences,” Sergeant Coudret emphasized.

He also advised residents to update their inventory of farm equipment, including recording model and serial numbers. Additionally, he stressed the importance of securing properties by locking up, even when on the premises, and contacting emergency services immediately if any suspicious behavior is witnessed.

In order to safeguard their homes and buildings, Sergeant Coudret recommended simple preventive measures such as staying vigilant, securing visible property, maintaining communication with neighbors, and reporting any suspicious findings.

If individuals come across any suspicious or unlawful activities, they are encouraged to call 111 if the incident is ongoing or utilize the 105 helpline if it has already occurred.
