Police in California are currently investigating the tragic death of a young Arizona mother who was killed in a dog attack while protecting her 5-year-old son. Emily Panuco, 26, sustained severe injuries in the attack that took place on February 27 inside her mother’s home in Big River, California. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office stated that Panuco suffered bite wounds that proved to be fatal.
Panuco had traveled to California to visit her mother and see some new puppies. Unfortunately, the visit took a tragic turn when the three adult dogs, including the mother of the puppies, became aggressive towards her son. In a selfless act of bravery, Panuco stepped in between her son and the dogs to shield him from harm. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her son, Jesse, was also injured in the attack and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The three dogs involved in the incident were euthanized by animal control.
The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Panuco’s husband and their children, including their 7-month-old daughter, Rosmé. The funds raised will go towards covering funeral costs, providing essential items for the family, and ensuring that Richie and his children have access to therapy and resources to help them cope with their loss.
Described as a devoted mother, Panuco worked at the CRITT library where she touched the lives of many children and families. Her absence has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. The fundraiser has already received over $36,000 in donations, showcasing the outpouring of support for the grieving family.
Richie, Panuco’s husband, described her as a hero and a great role model for their family and the community. He emphasized her supportive and joyful nature, highlighting her positive impact on those around her. In addition to being a loving mother, Panuco was also the legal guardian of her 16-year-old sister, Saralynn.
One of the dogs involved in the attack had been abandoned by a neighbor and taken in by Panuco’s mother. The family also had a Heeler mix named “Dipstick” and another mutt as pets. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it remains unclear if any criminal charges will be filed in connection to the tragic event.
The community is urged to keep the Panuco family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this heartbreaking time and work towards healing and rebuilding their lives.
